            “The exclusion of Belfast/Derry and Strabane from the bidding process for the European Capital of Culture in 2023, as a direct consequence of Brexit being imposed upon the North of Ireland, is potentially disastrous for our cities economies.

            This council has already on two occasions voted in favour of Special designated status for the North of Ireland within the EU and calls upon the EU to recognise the special circumstances that exist in the North of Ireland and to overturn the decision to exclude the North of Ireland from the bid process.

            This council as a matter of urgency will organise a cross party and business and civic delegation that will travel to Brussels to meet with the relevant EU body to lobby for this decision to be overturned.”
